At least, that was the outcome of the largest ever analysis of global farming, led by the University of Oxford and published in the journal Science. It is mind blowing to think that if the world moved away from farming meat and dairy, we would free up 75% of global land currently used for farming and deforestation - an area equivalent to the US, China, European Union and Australia combined – and still feed the world. Just imagine…
Not only this, unhealthy diets are now the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in western countries. Combine this with the economic arguments for shifting away from animal agriculture, such as this publication from the Office of Health Economics which found the the NHS could potentially save £18.8 billion per year, and the case becomes undeniable.

Join almost 1000 healthcare professionals including the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change, representing all of the major Royal Colleges, in signing this letter to call for the adoption of a plant-based by default approach to hospital catering.
It worked in New York City, with this initiative being introduced across all 11 public hospitals with vast cost savings, carbon savings, and improved patient satisfaction, so it can work here in the NHS too. Patient choice is maintained - the difference is that the plant-based options are presented first.
The world is changing one way or another. This is your opportunity to drive change that leads to healthier people living on a healthier planet - one that thrives with nature.
